The attacks at schools across our country have strengthened the resolve of communities to complete assessments of schools, colleges and universities, and develop plans to safeguard our children from attacks at their schools. The National Sheriffs Association recognized the need for federal, state, county, local, tribal, and private sector organizations charged with protecting our children in their schools, to have a uniform, comprehensive, and holistic method of performing integrated Threat, Risk, and Vulnerability assessments. The Coalition also recognized that a comprehensive assessment must provide information that is readily available for operational use. The School Based Threat, Risk, and Vulnerability Assessment (SBTRVA) methodology is based upon universally applicable best practices and elements common to the most recognized assessment methodologies and was developed to assist school administration, staff and employees, and responders from all emergency response disciplines tasked with keeping our children secure to understand and complete threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments of schools and apply the information gathered in the assessments to help us protect our children, faculty, staff and visitors in their schools.
The SBTRVA is a comprehensive assessment that evaluates the school community’s strengths and weaknesses; identifies the school system’s critical infrastructure and key resources; evaluates the school system and community’s emergency responders’ capability to prevent, protect, prepare for, respond to, and recover from an attack; evaluates the threats to the school from an all-hazard perspective, evaluates the risk to each school in the system as well as the associated Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CI/KR); and provides a comprehensive vulnerability assessment for the individual schools and related infrastructure.
The course focuses on the importance of having various emergency response disciplines from both the public and private sectors participate in the assessment process in conjunction with school security, school administration, faculty and staff, allowing for comparisons to be made across various missions, agencies, and topics for which risk is assessed. Specifically, the training demonstrates how the information gathered in the assessment process can be used to enhance the applicable capability-based preparedness principals to optimize reductions in risk.
Participants are encouraged to register with other stakeholders in their school districts to work together on an assessment that can be used by both law enforcement, fire, EMS and school personnel.
This 3-day class is limited to 50 participants. Class begins at 0800 each day.
